But things don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t go as planned very often and by now these two lakes are my two the most visited and photographed places in New Zealand, so much for planning, huh?!<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yktravelphoto.com\/pi\/1016\/lake-pukaki-south-island-new-zealand\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lake Pukaki, South  Island, New Zealand\"  itemprop=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yktravelphoto.com\/places\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/PL-NZSILPUKA06.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"367\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lake Pukaki is the largest of the three parallel lakes created by receding glacier ice more than 12000 years ago. Lake is fed by a melt-water from Hooker, Mueller and Tasman glaciers and contains large volumes of extremely fine rock particles \u00e2\u20ac\u201c glacier flour, which adds beautiful turquoise colour to the water.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yktravelphoto.com\/pi\/1018\/lake-pukaki-south-island-new-zealand\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lake Pukaki,  South  Island, New Zealand\"  itemprop=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yktravelphoto.com\/places\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/PL-NZSILPUKA01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"367\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lake Pukaki is\u00c2\u00a0260 km west of Christchurch or about 4 hours drive and a very hard to miss &#8211; road passes just along the coast presenting some extraordinary views.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yktravelphoto.com\/pi\/1012\/lake-pukaki-south-island-new-zealand\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lake Pukaki, South  Island, New Zealand\"  itemprop=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yktravelphoto.com\/places\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/PL-NZSILPUKA05.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"367\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are several lookouts along the road with excellent views of Aoraki\/Mount Cook. Unfortunately, most of these lookouts\u00c2\u00a0are not marked, so be alert and ready to\u00c2\u00a0pull over, otherwise you are going to miss some nice scenery.\u00c2\u00a0There is also a small visitor centre\u00c2\u00a0 located at the southern end of the lake on top of the dam. My\u00c2\u00a0personal favorite spot is near a small unmarked camping area next to the Hayman Road.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yktravelphoto.com\/pi\/1029\/aoraki-mount-cook-lake-pukaki-south-island-new-zealand\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1899\" title=\"Aoraki\/Mount Cook,  Lake Pukaki, South Island, New Zealand\"  itemprop=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yktravelphoto.com\/places\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/PL-NZSILPUKA04.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"367\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Before posting this article I spent quite a bit of time researching what the word &#8220;Pukaki&#8221; means.
