Tower and keepers cottages of\u00c2\u00a0 the Barrenjoey lighthouse were built from a local sandstone quarried nearby.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yktravelphoto.com\/pi\/510\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Barrenjoey Lighthouse, Palm Beach, NSW, Australia\"  itemprop=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yktravelphoto.com\/places\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/MG_4210.jpg\" alt=\"Barrenjoey Lighthouse, Palm Beach, NSW, Australia\" width=\"550\" height=\"367\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Originally produced by two oil wick burners,\u00c2\u00a0red 700 candlepower light,\u00c2\u00a0was upgraded to 6000 candlepower acetilene\u00c2\u00a0gas apparatus\u00c2\u00a0in 1932. At the same time, red color character of the Barrenjoey lighthouse had been replaced with a group flashing white light. Today lighthouse flashes 4 times every 20 seconds.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yktravelphoto.com\/pi\/517\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1236\" title=\"Barrenjoey Lighthouse, Palm Beach, NSW, Australia\"  itemprop=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yktravelphoto.com\/places\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/MG_4280.jpg\" alt=\"Barrenjoey Lighthouse, Palm Beach, NSW, Australia\" width=\"550\" height=\"367\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Later, in 1972, the light was converted to electric power with a new lamp capable of 75000\u00c2\u00a0cd.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yktravelphoto.com\/pi\/511\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Barrenjoey Lighthouse, Palm Beach, NSW, Australia\"  itemprop=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yktravelphoto.com\/places\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/MG_4221.jpg\" alt=\"Barrenjoey Lighthouse, Palm Beach, NSW, Australia\" width=\"550\" height=\"367\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lighthouse itself, oil house, keepers and assistant keepers cottages are all\u00c2\u00a0in a great condition, mainly due to great efforts of Jervis and Bridget Sparks, who spent 3 decades of their life as unofficial lighthouse keepers researching the history of the Barrenjoey and looking after the\u00c2\u00a0lighthouse and surrounding headland.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1235\" title=\"Barrenjoey Lighthouse, Palm Beach, NSW, Australia\"  itemprop=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yktravelphoto.com\/places\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/MG_4274.jpg\" alt=\"Barrenjoey Lighthouse, Palm Beach, NSW, Australia\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Old oil house, the place were oil for original wick burners was stored, is now used as small museum and is definitely worth a visit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yktravelphoto.com\/pi\/515\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1234\" title=\"Barrenjoey Lighthouse, Palm Beach, NSW, Australia\"  itemprop=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yktravelphoto.com\/places\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/MG_4271.jpg\" alt=\"Barrenjoey Lighthouse, Palm Beach, NSW, Australia\" width=\"550\" height=\"367\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lighthouse is located at the north end of the Palm Beach &#8211; Barrenjoey Head. It was named by Governor Phillip in 1788, when he discovered a Hawkesbury region seeking\u00c2\u00a0land suitable for a large scale farming. In a local aboriginal language Barrenjoey means a &#8220;small kangaroo&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yktravelphoto.com\/pi\/513\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Barrenjoey Lighthouse, Palm Beach, NSW, Australia\"  itemprop=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yktravelphoto.com\/places\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/MG_4253.jpg\" alt=\"Barrenjoey Lighthouse, Palm Beach, NSW, Australia\" width=\"550\" height=\"367\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To get to the top of the Barrenjoey Head and lighhouse you will need to complete one of the hard walking trails:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>700 meter service road, or<\/li>\n<li>500 meter Smugglers Track, previously used by Customs Station.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yktravelphoto.com\/pi\/507\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Barrenjoey Lighthouse, Palm Beach, NSW, Australia\"  itemprop=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yktravelphoto.com\/places\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/MG_4068.jpg\" alt=\"Barrenjoey Lighthouse, Palm Beach, NSW, Australia\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Both ways are hard, but present great views over Pittwater and Palm Beach. I&#8217;d recommend to take one trail\u00c2\u00a0on the way up and return by the other.<\/p>\n<p>There are no water or any other facilities at the lighthouse.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yktravelphoto.com\/pi\/512\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1231\" title=\"Barrenjoey Lighthouse, Palm Beach, NSW, Australia\"  itemprop=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yktravelphoto.com\/places\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/MG_4246.jpg\" alt=\"Barrenjoey Lighthouse, Palm Beach, NSW, Australia\" width=\"550\" height=\"367\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If weather permits, every Sunday, park volunteers provide regular guided tours. During a 30-minutes long tour you will be allowed to visit lighthouse museum, get inside and to the top of the tower.
